Urine Powered Batteries??!

In 2005, Scientists in Singapore developed a battery powered by urine. The Scientists were able to produce electric power using liquid as a catalyst thanks to a special mixture of magnesium and carbon inside the batteries.

Now, a Japanese company has brought this urine powered battery technology to market with the NoPoPo (Non-Pollution Power) Aqua Batteries. Just use the included plastic pipette to inject urine into the battery chamber. Grossed out by pee? You can also use other types of liquid including beer, apple juice, cola, and saliva and of course urine. When I first heard about the NoPoPo, I thought it might be a joke. Making silly inventions is a popular hobby in Japan called Chingdogu. But the NoPoPo is no joke.

A single urine powered AA battery can power a flashlight for about 20 hours (500 milliamp-hours). Not exactly the most powerful battery on the shelf, but it's a great start for this environmentally friendly energy technology. The NoPoPo aqua powered batteries are currently only available in both AA and AAA sizes, but the company has future plans to produce all common battery sizes.

Off the top of my head, here are just a few reasons why you should love the NoPoPo:

used batteries contain mercury and are bad for the environment
using your own body fluids to power batteries will save you money
it's a reliable source of power for life saving tools like flashlights and radios
people who live in remote areas and don't have access to fresh batteries can now use battery powered gadgets and technology

Greenpeace is conducting a market survey of the most environmentally friendly consumer electronic products currently on the market. After several “green electronics guide” reports that rated electronics makers of big brands, and their Greener Apple campaign, Greenpeace is now looking to evaluate gadgets at the product level. This means that companies large and small will be evaluated.

If your company has a product in the computer, mobile phone, PDA, MP3 player or games console categories that is less toxic, easier to recycle and more energy efficient than your competitors Greenpeace would like to hear from your company.

The reusable grocery bag saga continues. My friend Katie was the first to tell me about the above Anya Hindmarch tote a few weeks ago, before she went to Paris. She was looking forward to getting her hands on one while in Europe (I guess she got a little distracted getting engaged or something!) Then the Image section of the L.A. Times covered the phenomenon (check out the full article about the $15 bag that's flying off shelves right here). I have accidently started a little bit of a tote collection and I wouldn't mind adding this to it. For groceries though? I don't know, is that a little pretentious? Great beach bag though. At CeBIT 2007, Chinese electronics maker, HTW, introduced a cell phone that can be charged by the sun. It gets 25 minutes of talk time from just 40 minutes of charging in sunlight, it can be charged with indoor light when no direct sunshine is available and even candlelight. Called the 'Light-Energy Mobile Phone', it is a relatively slender clamshell with an 84 x 47.6 x 0.8mm solar panel built into the flip side. Greener Printing Options

Yesterday's post examined some eco-friendly options for computer printing paper. Today I wanted to look and see about any greener options for a printers on the market.

As you probably know, the big companies making printers: Epson, HP, Canon, etc often sell their printers at cost or even below cost so you will be forced to use their proprietary ink cartridges sold at exorbitant prices. Refilling these cartridges yourself is one way to beat the system, and their are many solutions on the web in terms of good quality inks and refilling systems and kits. Echostore.com has a variety of options to refill your ink cartridges and seems reasonably priced.

If the thought of doing this all yourself seems too messy or worrisome then you might consider going to your nearest Walgreens, apparently they now have a program to refill your printer cartridges. Here is a link to more info. I found this information about walgreens at worstedwitch.com has a terrific post on ecological issues around print cartridges.

The Hyundai QarmaQ concept is pushing the envelope in crossover utility vehicle design and construction. By the utilization of a high content of recycled plastics, derived mostly from discarded soft drink bottles, and some 29 other design, construction and material innovations, the QarmaQ boasts a weight reduction of 130 lbs as compared to vehicles of similar size and class. The designers claim that this results in a reduction in fuel usage equal to about one and a half SUV fuel tanks per vehicle per year. Granted, that may not seem like much when viewed on an individual vehicle basis, but multiply it by the total number of SUVs on the road and that's a lot of gallons saved.

The UN is moving forward on developing worldwide eScrap standards. The program, called Solving the Ewaste Problem (the StEP initiative) has its own site and an impressive list of charter members - Microsoft, Ericson, Dell, blah, blah, blah. And with 133,000 PCs being thrown out daily in the US alone, it's certainly timely.Recycling eWaste has the added bonus that (unlike some operations) much of this waste is worth some serious cash - floppy disks are only US $100 per ton, but lithium batteries are US $2060. Worldmapper is an extraordinary project out of Sheffield Uni in the UK. Countries represented not by their land mass, but by their human activity. The top map shows Passenger Cars (note how fat the northern hemisphere is, compared to the south. The bottom map illustrates population (the big blobs being China and India). Now look again at Cars for those two nations. Yet compare tiny New Zealand with the entire African continent for cars per 100 people. Oh, and that purple lump to the right is Japan!

Despite TreeHugger's best efforts to spread the word about low-power computing options, many computers are still built without a second thought to energy efficiency, and, in the US, hazardous substances like lead and mercury (the EU's RoHS and WEEE directives have cut them back in Europe). The guys at Extreme Tech decided to take a shot at building their own green machine, taking care to address both energy efficiency and hazardous materials. They grabbed a green power supply suitable for expansion to a bigger system in the future, all lead-free components, and even found that in many cases, the greenest components were more powerful than many less green options, because they're newer and more efficient. The end result isn't the greenest, most efficient machine we've ever seen, but it's extremely flexible, making it useful from just about anyone from gamers to bloggers to casual users with a few modifications, and shows that every computer user can have a green(er) machine. The article also includes some handy, step-by-step instructions (with pictures) of how to do it yourself and keep it green, and trumpets that in just about every case, smaller is better. ZINK: Printing Without Ink

A company called ZINK recently demonstrated a new way of printing that does not require ink ( see video). Unlike the existing technologies that use thermal printheads to transfer color to paper, the new media has the color embedded in it, in the form of dye crystals that are clear at room temperature. The paper is fairly affordable, at 20 to 25 cents for a 2 x 3 inch sheet. The eco-efficient aspect of this technology is that it eliminates wasteful ink packaging and discarded ink cartridges. ZINK says the paper is non-toxic and "recyclable". The company claims it can make ultraportable printers that can fit in a human hand or be integrated into digital cameras and cell phones.

Charge your electrical items in your handbag

Not exactly a handbag, but a purse. The way I see it (I carry two cellphones, a digital camera & a PDA in my huge handbag that my fiance said if a snatch theft is to happen to me, the thief would be really grateful) I need this purse badly.

The handbag is literally a power purse with six solar panels incorporated into the exterior design. Hynek connected these panels to a device inside the purse so that a cell phone, PDA, or other small electronic items can be charged. It was the stylish high-tech design, however, that won the $500 second-place design award in the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists' (AATCC) 2005 competition. The winning entries will be on display at the AATCC International Conference and Exhibition in Boston this fall.

A Pee Powered Battery

Just what you need when you are out in the woods: Scientists in (we believe) Singapore "soaked a piece of paper in a solution of copper chloride and sandwiched it between strips of magnesium and copper. This sandwich was then laminated between two sheets of transparent plastic. When a drop of urine is added to the paper through a slit in the plastic, a chemical reaction takes place that produces electricity. The prototype battery produced about 1.5 volts, the same as a standard AA battery, and runs for about 90 minutes. Researchers said the power, voltage, and lifetime of the battery can be improved by adjusting the geometry and materials used. Urine contains many ions (electrically charged atoms), which allows the electricity-producing chemical reaction to take place in the urine battery." Cell Phone > Deasembling

But five minutes costs money. Today most cell phones and other small electronics are shredded instead of taken apart for recycling, because the disassembly time is too expensive for the amount of material reclaimed.
